The disease commonly known as herpes is linked to infection by herpes simplex virus. The first infection (called" primary infection") by HSV may go unnoticed or to be rather painful and cause a profound mouth inflammation.

Mouth herpes, like the lip herpes, is most often produced by HSV1.

An estimated 70% of adults have been in contact with HSV1. The primary infection of herpes of the mouth is asymptomatic in approximately 90% of cases and usually occurs in childhood. When primary infection of herpes of the mouth is symptomatic, it can be marked by inflammation of the entire mouth (gingivostomatitis), characterized by redness, erosions or hemorrhages.

Incubation of herpes of the mouth takes between 2 and 12 days. It is often accompanied by fever gingivostomatitis at 39 Celsius degrees and neck glands.

The general trend is healing in 10 to 15 days, but the crisis may be punctuated by vomiting, refusal of food leading to dehydration, sometimes requiring hospitalization.

Recurrences of mouth herpes is commonly called "cold sore". The recurrence of mouth herpes most often occurs after a triggering factor (usually fatigue, fever, infectious disease, surgery, a dermo cosmetic act - dermabrasion, laser resurfacing of the face, taking cortisone, emotional distress, anxiety, depression, stress, frustrations, sexual intercourse, exposure to the sun and others). Mouth herpes usually seats on the edge of the lip, mouth, or on another part of the lower face (chin, around the nose, nostril, cheek).

The rash of mouth herpes is often preceded by pain, tingling, cooking, itching, which persists during the eruptions.
